PETTY traders operating in the Machinga Complex could now release a sigh of relief. This is after the call from Dr Didas Masaburi, the mayor of Dar es Salaam.
He has ordered the board of directors of this market which is located at Ilala, to review all contracts to traders who have rented stalls at the modern market.
It is unfortunate that this call comes at a time when this veteran politician is struggling to maintain his political career after being implicated in the illegal sale of the Dar es Salaam transportation company (UDA).
Let it suffice here to say that the petty traders are a permanent process in the all the major African cities, Dar es Salaam not being an exception, thus there must be permanent policies to solve their problems.
As long as they are permanent dwellers in cities it would be reasonable enough to incorporate them in the cities commercial fabric. For instance giving them soft loans and empowering them to know the business risks that are associated with bank loans.
The responsible ministries and city authorities must design business schemes that will make it easier for the machingas to know the ABCs of financial management.
